Restaurant Review: €448 for a Menu at Shiki Omakase

The luxury menu featuring Wagyu and caviar is likely the most expensive in Austria. However, Shiki Omakase also sets an exceptionally high bar in terms of quality and overall experience.

Minimum age: 16 years — similar to the policy at the nearby Albertina Modern for the current Marina Abramović exhibition. The new Shiki Omakase, which — like Shiki with its saké shop and cooking school — belongs to conductor Joji Hattori, has a few additional rules in place: vegetarian options are not available, and punctuality is essential. This may sound somewhat unfriendly at first glance, but it has its justification.

The simultaneous start for all guests — there is seating for only eight — is not only related to the way dishes are served in this intimate mini-restaurant tucked behind the saké shop, but also to the timing of cooking the sushi rice: the rice should cool naturally to skin temperature by the time the nigiri course is served.
